During the intervening years, J++ has been largely deprecated in the marketplace. You would be wasting your time learning this product. Instead just try going to the Sun Java website and downloading the latest official Java. You can easily find one that runs under MS Windows. Also, this helps all of the Java user base stay with a unified Java, rather than fragmenting into awkwardly [in]compatible camps. When FrontPage 2003 came out, it worked just different enough to totally confuse me. I never did figure it out and simply went back to 2002. Since Microsoft has now dropped FrontPage, I figured I needed to evaluate Expression Web. Again, it was baffling. It looked somewhat like FrontPage, but I didn’t have a clue how to use the package. Finally, I purchased the Total Training for Microsoft Expression Web DVD training course. Wow! Instructor Janine Warner clearly and logically showed me how to actually use the package, including things I had never tried like CSS. Without Janine’s training, I never would have figured out what to do with EW. The Total Training package is excellent, and Janine did a super job. I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I learned and how quickly I learned it. Recently my nephew was charged with developing a web site for his employer and I bought him a copy right away. This is a great way of learning web development and an easy step into Cascading Style Sheets. This review is from: AE EXPRESSION WEB 1.0 WIN32 EN CD/DVD (CD-ROM) Expressions web is a good product to use for designing any web site. However, some things could have been much better. However, I strongly feel that certain things about this product could have been better. For example, 1. If you are designing your pages in HTML mode instead of ASP mode, you will not be able to use certain features, which are reserved only for ASP mode. 2. The product says that you can create pages in JSP, however, it does not mention that you can not create the JSP pages in drag and drop format. This make it somewhat of a pain in the butt, because you have to create the JSP pages in “code” mode. Some people don’t have time for all that, including me. 3. You can only edit PHP pages to a certain extent, since those types of web pages are not fully supported by expressions web. This was irritating, since half of my websites’ pages are in PHP. 4. Figuring out how to add a video to your web pages takes too much time. 5. Sometimes the “div” containers that I designed my pages’ content in did not look the same as it did in the program, when I opened them up in my browser. It was irritating to have to go back and figure out what was wrong,especially since it was supposed to be a “What you see is what you get” editor. Many of the features specifically allow developers to create better databases more easily. FileMaker Server has some improvements that include: * Easier installation and administration. * Better statistics and easier access to them through the admin console. * Backup file clone allows you to save the database structure automatically through a schedules script. * Save and load schedules when migrating to new hardware. This will also save time when upgrading to the next version of FileMaker server. * Specify user account when running a script on the server. * Set time limits for script schedules. * No limit on the number of users…bumped from 999 to whatever. * Administrative user groups. In a large corporate environment with a shared server, you can now assign administrative access to specific databases only and not the entire server. Overall, I highly recommend this upgrade for all FileMaker users. It’s a great value and welcome upgrade. I was especially interested in learning about Expression Web. The Expression Web tutorial covered not only the features of the software, but it also gave a good discussion about standards-based web design and using CSS and HTML. The discussion about web design was great. I did notice one mistake that was kind of major. They said that when using layers- a powerful feature for overlapping HTML components, you can only position them in an “absolute” way. So the elements do not change position when you resize the browser window. This is not true. You simply change the layer position property from “absolute” to “relative”. A layer can be held at a relative position just like any other HTML component. Other than that one mistake, this is a great product. I would recommend it.
